Responsible Gambling | ETD Online

Gambling should stay recreational and manageable. This page explains the control tools available to UK players, the signs that play may be becoming harmful, and where to find support if you need a break or extra help.

1. What is responsible gambling?

Responsible gambling means treating gambling as paid entertainment rather than as a source of income or a way to fix personal or financial pressure. In practice, that means setting limits, understanding that losses are part of the activity, and being ready to stop when the experience is no longer enjoyable or controlled.

2. Age restriction – 18+ only

In the UK, gambling is restricted to adults aged 18 and over. Licensed operators are expected to verify age before allowing real-money gambling to continue. ETD Online is not intended for minors, and we do not market gambling to under-18s. If you are concerned that a young person may be gambling, contact the operator directly and consider using parental controls or device-level restrictions.

3. Signs of problem gambling

Gambling harm can affect people at different levels and for different reasons. Recognising the warning signs early can make it easier to take action before the situation grows more serious. Common indicators include:

  • Spending more money or time on gambling than you can afford or intended.
  • Chasing losses – trying to win back money you have lost by gambling more.
  • Lying to family, friends, or employers about how much you gamble or how much you have lost.
  • Borrowing money, selling possessions, or getting into debt to gamble.
  • Feeling stressed, anxious, or irritable when you try to cut down or stop.
  • Gambling to escape problems or to improve your mood.
  • Neglecting work, studies, or relationships because of gambling.

If any of these points feel familiar, consider using the tools below immediately and reaching out to a specialist support service. Help is available, and it is confidential.

4. Tools to stay in control

UK-licensed operators should provide a range of controls designed to help you stay within your own limits. These tools are most effective when they are set early rather than only after a difficult session.

  • Deposit limits: set a maximum amount you can deposit per day, week, or month. Once set, increases usually take effect after a cooling-off period; decreases are often immediate.
  • Loss limits: some sites let you set a limit on how much you can lose in a given period.
  • Session time limits and reminders: limit how long you can play in one session, or get reminders at intervals so you can decide whether to continue.
  • Reality checks: periodic pop-ups showing how long you have been playing and how much you have won or lost in that session.
  • Self-exclusion from a single site: you can ask an operator to exclude you from their site (or app) for a period (e.g. 6 months, 1 year, or longer). During that time you cannot use your account to gamble.
  • Cooling-off period: a short break (e.g. 24 hours or 48 hours) during which you cannot access your account.

These settings are usually found in the account area or under sections such as “Responsible Gambling” or “Stay in Control.” If you plan to gamble at all, setting deposit and time limits before you begin is a sensible first step.

5. GamStop – self-exclusion from all UK licensed sites

GamStop is a free UK self-exclusion service that blocks access to gambling websites and apps licensed by the UK Gambling Commission. When you register, you choose an exclusion period and should not be able to open or use accounts with participating UK-licensed operators during that time. You can register at www.gamstop.co.uk. It is important to remember that GamStop does not cover every offshore site, so using it works best alongside a firm decision to stop gambling rather than simply switching platforms.

7. Our commitment

ETD Online is an information website, not a gambling operator. We try to reflect that responsibility by:

  • linking only to operators that present clear regulatory and safer gambling information for UK players;
  • including responsible gambling messaging and support links throughout the Site, not only on this page;
  • avoiding content that targets minors or frames gambling as a solution to financial stress; and
  • treating gambling as a risky leisure activity that should be approached with limits and caution.

We cannot control how individual users behave once they leave the Site, but we can point readers toward safer choices, clearer information, and support services when they need them.

8. Further information

The UK Gambling Commission provides consumer information and regulates gambling in Great Britain: www.gamblingcommission.gov.uk. If you have a complaint about a licensed operator, you may also need to follow that operator's complaints process or use its alternative dispute resolution provider where available.
